CLEO
Reducing Hospital Infections with Easy-to-Use Digital Tools
The problem
CLEO, the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Outcomes Research, is a Greek nonprofit working to improve patient safety and healthcare quality, with a focus on preventing hospital-acquired infections. That focus matters: healthcare-associated infection (HAI) rates in Greece are two to three times those in other EU countries. Every Greek public hospital has a designated Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) nurse, but much of the role is administrative: filling in forms and spreadsheets, compiling surveillance data and calculating rates, often on top of other duties. That leaves little time for the work that clinicians do best: directly engaging patients and other staff.
The solution
As CLEO's sole product lead, Katie helped turn their nationally awarded infection-prevention program, GRIPP, into Nexeia IPC, a platform that automates much of the administrative work of IPC to give staff back their time for what matters most: engaging with colleagues and patients, and thinking strategically about how to keep them safe. She designed the UX collaboratively with frontline hospital teams, and built the MVP herself with AI-assisted development. Features include:
- Role-based best-practice workflows to support IPC activities across clinical care, facility operations, data management and analysis, and even financial management
- Integrated/automated infection surveillance
- Interactive training assigned and tracked by staff role
- AI review of a facility's uploaded protocols and policies against WHO and CDC guidelines, highlighting the changes needed
- A machine-learning model that assigns patients a risk score before they develop an HAI (pending regulatory approval)
The impact
A streamlined, user-friendly digital platform that helps health facilities deliver safe, reliable infection prevention and control across their entire enterprise. Now in go-to-market, with strong early interest from hospitals.
