CLEO
Streamlining the IPCAF so Hospitals can Understand and Improve Their Infection-Prevention Capacity
The problem
CLEO, a Greek patient-safety nonprofit, helps hospitals strengthen infection prevention and control (IPC), and offers an IPC assessment as the starting point for its Nexeia IPC platform. The WHO Infection Prevention and Control Assessment Framework (IPCAF) is a standardized tool to measure, understand and improve hospitals' IPC programs. But its manual, often confusing, and frequently redundant paper form can take a full day or more for hospital teams to complete and score.
The solution
Katie walked through the form from the user's point of view, removed redundancy and clarified what each question asked, keeping WHO scoring intact for benchmarking. Then she automated it end to end: an Airtable form for capture, deterministic scoring for quantitative questions, LLM parsing to score free-text answers, and a script that generates a PDF report upon form completion, distilling results in an easy-to-understand format with actionable recommendations.
The impact
Administration time fell from a full day to about two hours, with the report created within seconds of form completion. The assessment became hospitals' entry point to Nexeia IPC.
